2021 NT State Triples battled out under cover

by Admin on 03/15/2021

The 2021 NT State Triples Championships held at the Darwin Bowls and Social Club featured some top matches to produce repeat winners from last year.

Trystan Smallacombe, Mark Malogorski, and Ian Smith took out their third title in succession. In fact for Trystan Smallacombe and Mark Malogorski it was their fourth in succession with Ian Smith joining the trio in 2019. The trio beat Warren Corowa, Corryn Huddy and Paul Rodin in a match that was tight until the last 3 ends where Trystan Smallacombe’s team were able to break away.

The Ladies title also saw repeat winners in Colleen Orr, Karen Lane, and Jen Sullivan taking the title with a solid win over the “family” Pauline McKenzie, Julie Cadd, and Jodie Riechstien.

For Jen Sullivan the 2021 title was her fourth Triples title in a row. It was Colleen Orr’s third and two in a row for Karen Lane.

Both the ladies semi-finals were a highlight with Colleen Orr’s team beating Bronwyn Hagger, Lisa Hambour, and Deanne Harrison 17/16 in an extra end after being 16 all at the completion of the 15th and final end.

The other semi-final saw Pauline McKenzie’s team hold off and win by one shot over Siobhan Tootell, Sez James and Elisa Rigoni 13/12.

During the latter stages of the sectional rounds, heavy rain forced one match to be transferred under the cover, and at one point threatened to flood onto the under cover surface. Fortunately the rain backed off allowing all games to continue.

Congratulations to the Darwin Bowls and Social Club for a well prepared and operated venue and many thanks to the umpires: John Meneguzzi, John Lillywhite and Pat Hogan.
